Social Justice- “Candid Conversations”

WHAT RESONATES WITH ME - YOGA OFF THE MAT

The practice of yoga extends beyond our awakening from savasana. The dedication to our practice as it improves our strength, stamina and connection to self can be taken off the mat as well. Yoga is about a connection not just with our own bodies but also with the world, the community, and immediate persons within our space.

As a Yin Yoga instructor and student, what resonates with me is this idea of sitting with the uncomfortable. Allowing the body to ease into sensations as if befriending it, all while remaining relatively still for longer periods of time. Being guided into pigeon pose let’s say and slowly allowing the body to release from the gripping, so that the gentle stress being experienced can be fully embodied.

On any given day our bodies may respond differently but we keep coming back to the mat. Slowly, as time goes on maybe in the smallest of increments, we develop a capacity for space and tolerance, can cultivate awareness and even bring about a sense of calm.

We can use those very skills off the mat as well, when we try to navigate the current unrest and upheaval in our nation. When we try to have conversations that may lead to turmoil within but continue to lean into it anyway because we’ve developed a practice.

Join me off the mat for “Candid Conversations,” as we dive deeper, let go of the gripping and pause to listen and thus become, through engagement in our community. Register at 4 Corners Yoga & Wellness.
